Purpose

This information is intended to be used in conjunction with the Danforth Campus Advertising and Marketing Policy. This applies to all University-recognized student groups, faculty, staff, and departments. 

Permitted Surfaces

  • Chalking is permitted only on uncovered, horizontal concrete or asphalt surfaces exposed to rain, unless otherwise restricted.
  • Chalking is not permitted on the following surfaces:
    • Buildings
    • Walls
    • Trees
    • Covered sidewalks
    • Stairs/stairwells
    • Any other elevated surfaces
    • All patio areas surrounding Olin Library
  • The Chalk Walls in the Fun Room are available to be reserved on Reserve-A-Space under the Danforth Campus Advertising Spaces template.

General Regulations

  • All chalking must be located a minimum of ten (10) feet from any building entrances.
  • Overwriting, removing, defacing, or altering existing chalking is prohibited by anyone other than the person or organization who did the chalking or authorized University officials.
  • Only water-soluble sidewalk chalk may be used. No spray chalk or other materials may be used.

Associated Costs

Costs associated with removal of chalk or other materials will be the responsibility of the organization or group.


Accountability and Compliance

Violations may result in removal fees, loss of advertising privileges, or referral to the appropriate University conduct process.

Compliance with these guidelines is required for all individuals and organizations engaging in chalking activities on campus.
